Buy the Book: Amazon~~PublisherMiddle-grade horror novelist Burke Bennett has been hit hard by writer’s block. He finally decides to get out of San Francisco and head for the tiny town of Rainbow Arroyo, New Mexico, and a B&B called the Raven. He’s hoping the peace and quiet and change of scenery will help kick him back into high gear so he can finish his latest Sir Reapy tale.
The town is known to be welcoming to LGBTQ folx, but what he doesn’t expect is for the B&B owner Dayton Barnes to be so attractive, for Dayton’s daughter Vicki to be an uber-fan of his books, or for the town to be so… Well, nosy, quaint, and adorable all at once.
The chemistry between Burke and Dayton is off the charts, but navigating a relationship between them while running a business and spending long hours writing is a challenge, not to mention they have to consult Vicki and there is a lot of distance between their homes. Will the fall harvest festival and Halloween set the tone for romance, or just for a terror of a disappointment?
Harvesting Love is a heartwarming small town romance featuring a Bed and Breakfast owner with aspirations of opening a gluten-free bakery, and a frustrated horror author who discovers that trying to build a family isn’t quite as scary as his books.
Chapter One
Burke Bennet knew one thing for sure – not a single monster he’d ever written was as scary as a blank page staring back at him.
God, he really needed to get away. He was trying to finish the second to last book in his middle grade horror series, and he was way behind. He’d blown through a deadline two weeks ago and received an extension with no argument but, even so, he was just…stuck.
Stuck and stressed.
Stuck, stressed, and worried.
That deadline was the reason he was headed to the Provincetown of the West for a retreat in a little mountain town full of artsy-fartsy shops, gorgeous scenery, and the queerest of the queer.
Rainbow Arroyo.
Even the name was fabulously gay.
He couldn’t wait.
“Siri, call Evelyn.” His agent had asked him—well, told him-- to call her when he landed. He wasn’t sure why, it wasn’t like he was going to get lost in Albuquerque, but he knew better than to not do as he was told.
“Calling Evelyn Ellis.”
He pulled out of his parking space and followed the GPS out of the airport while the phone rang.
“Did you make it to Albuquerque safely?” She was such a little mother, for all she could be a stone-cold bitch in negotiations. “Did you get yourself some food? Did you get a decent vehicle?”
“Contrary to popular belief, Ev, I do know how to travel.” He hadn’t gotten any food though. That would have been a great idea.
Oops.
“I got a big black SUV. An Escalade, I think. Traveling in style, though I haven’t seen much of anything yet.” He’d be able to drive himself and seven of his soon to be new and best vacation buddies around. “I might have over-packed, but I definitely have room in the car.”
“Well, good. You should really be able to find some amazing food while you’re there. I’ve heard that’s one of the best things about New Mexico. The food and the views.”
He needed to eat, and the view was great. “I’m hoping to find more than the view and some tacos.” He was hoping for some inspiration.
And maybe some hook-up type company too.
He sighed. “I hope this works, Ev.”
“It will. You just need a change of pace, of venue. You’ll have a few weeks to focus and write and nothing else. It’ll be amazing.” He had to believe her. She sounded like she meant it.
“Nothing else, huh? Come on, Ev. I’ll shrivel up.” Doing nothing wasn’t going to inspire him.
“I do not want to hear about your hookups, your dates, or your wild nights. I want to hear about words on the screen. Everything else stays with you, understood?”
The temptation to say “Yes, Mom” was almost impossible to resist, but he knew he’d better not. “You’re no fun. But yes. Words. All the words. And it will be amazing.”
“It will. Be careful, won’t you? Drive safe and call with updates.”
“I will. The drive is getting kind of pretty now that I’m away from the airport. I’ll text when I’m settled in. Bye, Ev.”
The call disconnected, and he had a look around. It was a highway, like any highway, but the farther he got from the airport, the more relaxed he felt. This would be good for him; he was sure of it. He’d get up early and write, do some sightseeing, maybe find a local bar for the evenings. No city, no stress, just a vacation for his brain.
This would be good. It would.
He settled into his very comfortable seat and cranked up the radio.
It was time for a great adventure.
